The company that we have chosen to compare with the chapter and write the report on is BAPCO. Following is a brief introduction about the company: BAPCO, wholly owned by the Government of Bahrain, is engaged in the oil industry including exploration and prospecting for oil, drilling, production, refining, distribution of petroleum products and natural gas, sales and exports of crude oil and refined products. The company owns a 250,000 barrel-a-day refinery, storage facilities for more than 14 million barrels, a marketing terminal, and a marine terminal for its petroleum products. BAPCO's prime customers for crude oil and refined products are based in the Middle East, India, the Far East, South East Asia and Africa, and 95 percent of refined products are exported. 2. MAIN PURPOSE OF THE CHAPTER
The business world is continuously transforming, as layoffs, bankruptcies, mergers, and restructurings occur every day. These situational shifts present psychological challenges to both individuals and organizations, and many of them respond in unhealthy ways. The author (William Bridges) describes healthy responses to these challenges, providing practical, step-by-step strategies for minimizing the disruptions caused by workplace change. He asserts that organizations, like individuals, have life cycles and that "it is helpful to have a map of the organization's life cycle that is comparable to the human development theories that clarify the path an individual follows through human childhood, adolescence, and adulthood." He goes on to explain "the seven stages of organizational life" -- Dreaming the Dream, Launching the Venture, Getting Organized, Making It, Becoming an Institution, Closing In, and Dying - and He explains the role of transition in this sequence. He also talks about the role of transition in the organizational life cycle, describing transitions as dynamic interludes between one of the seven stages of the organizational life and the next, and that multiple transitions are needed to actually carry the organization a step further along the path of its development. He then explains the five laws of organizational development and the problems the organizations encounter during its life cycle. Towards the end of the chapter He talks about renewal and how to steer the ship of the organizations life away from the deadly stage of closing in towards the path of renewal which involves finding ways to recapture and reincorporate the energy of the first three phases of the organizational life cycle.
