Causes and Consequences
The Deepwater Horizon oil spill also referred to as the BP oil spill or the Gulf of Mexico oil spill has been named largest accidental marine oil spill in the history of the petroleum industry. The spill occurred on 20 April, 2010 which lasted for 87 days and end on 15 July, 2010. The oil spill was caused by an explosion which resulted from high-pressure methane gas from the well that expanded into the drilling riser and was released onto the drilling rig, where it ignited and exploded, engulfing the rig. As a result of this explosion, 11 lives were lost and 17 employees were treated for injuries. The explosion caused the oil to leak into the Gulf of Mexico and it spread to the coast lines of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. The final estimate reported that 53,000 barrels per day were escaping from the well just before it was capped on 15 July. According to the White House oil spill commission the causes of the oil spill was because BP and its partners made a series of cost-cutting decisions and the lack of a system that was not in place that ensures safety. BP also did its own internal investigation and admitted that it made mistakes which led to the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. In June of 2012 BP agreed to setup a $20 billion fund to compensate victims of the oil spill. The BP oil spill did affect Florida and the city in which I live in. Since Florida is a tourist business, many vacations were cancelled because the visitors did not to vacation with the oil spill on the beached. Therefore, vacation bookings for that summer were almost non-existent and it did hurt Florida’s economy.
