Liberalism constitutes more government control in the economy and other aspects of life. Progressivism is a synonym for this. Modern Liberalism (progressivism) fully took its roots in America when Woodrow Wilson was elected president. Unlike presidents before him, he believed that the government should have a vast amount of power over the masses, and he created many social programs that used taxpayer money. We also began to rack up massive debt to pay for these programs of largesse. This liberalism continued into FDR's term, who took advantage of the Great Depression by creating many more social programs that expanded our debt and did nothing to improve the economy or reduce unemployment (which was north of 10% for most of the time up until WWII.
That brings us to LBJ, a racist senator who never once voted for any of the civil rights bills while he was a senator in the 50's. He signed the 1964 civil rights act because he knew that, since a Democrat signed the bill into law, he could gain the African American vote. He is even quoting as saying " "I'll have those n******s voting Democratic for the next 200 years" by passing the bill. Don't believe me, look it up. Unfortunately, Liberalism is responsible for the massive national debt and government spending which currently plagues us.
Conservatism on the other hand, is the belief that the individual is fully capable of caring for himself and can perform the best when he/she is not inhibited by the government. Conservatives believe the government should be limited, so that no one is dependent upon it. When people are dependent upon things such as alcohol, or government assistance, they rarely ever reach their potential because they find no incentive to produce for themselves.
Conservatives, contrary to what the media has told you, love people. They want to see the individual succeed, no matter what differences they have. To really fully understand it, there are a myriad of authors out there who explain...
