In 50 years time, which of today’s taken-for-granted human activities will seem most curious?
Did you know it? If the entire earth were covered by solar panels, one sunny day would provide 27 years of energy consumption, according to the Energy Information Administration.
Well, today solar panels are taken-for-granted to create energy. Just for your information, in 2010 the total global solar PV capacity was nearly 40 GW. Two years later, the capacity reached up to 90 GW. In 50 years time, growth capacity is definitely expected to reach peaks.
Three main factors could explain this. First, political plans at both international and regional level encourage businesses and people to rely on natural resources to get energy. Second, people are increasingly aware and concerned by environmental issues. Mostly because they realized pollution is leaving a significant footprint on earth. Third, it represents a business opportunity to replace oil by natural resources such as solar, wind, or hydro energies as the current global system is quite dependent from petroleum industry. Energy will be then accessible for everyone at lower cost.
Therefore, in 50 years time, we could expect sustainable development to become the main source of energy by far versus oil. Technically, this is available. It just needs some time to get democratized. Since ages sun, wind, and water exists. That is not a discovery! But how one can imagine that one day, we could rely on natural resources to make our cars working or planes flying? What is sure, it will deeply change the face of the world, from political interests to socio-economic challenges.
